BUSINESS START-UP:

BECOMING THE RIGHT PERSON

It has been severally said that not merely people, but the right people, make an organization successful. Often however, the demonstration of that the right people is directed at the staff. I believe that the first person who should become the right person is that person with the vision. No one can go far with a ‘do-as-i-say-but-not-as-i-do’ attitude. You cannot have courteous staff if as an employer you are rude, brash or impolite.

While speaking at a conference, there was a lady employer who said that she felt that example was the most powerful motivator for employees. Expanding on that she said, she usually arrived work earlier than her staff, and often closed later than them. This made them come in early as well. They saw ‘Madam’ doing it and simply copied. For them it was not merely an official instruction but a way of life. There are certain attitudes an employer or workplace leader should imbibe and demonstrate.

1. HUMILITY & COMMUNICATION:

The business landscape does not have space for proud people. You may be better than others, but who cares if business is not flowing in your direction? Know when to mend fences for your business, or ensure apologies are tendered, especially when you know that your staff has issues with your clients. Which is better, to keep making money while the business relationship gets better or to lose business while maintaining your rights? Granted that some customers will push you to the edge, you must learn to be assertive without losing business. Except in cases where the issue is engendered by corrupt propositions.

2. SHAPE UP

You cannot be sloppy and expect your staff to do better than you. In small and medium scale businesses in particular, seeing how the boss operates seriously impacts on staff performance, even if your business is manned by just you and your spouse for now.

I have known a certain businessman for over ten years, and after building a multi-million naira business, at the point when others start taking things ‘a little easier’ he still resumes work well before 8.00am. It’s no mystery how he succeeded. Many think that a business person is one who resumes work whenever he feels like and closes anytime he fancies. If you don’t personally show sufficient diligence in your business, no one can be blamed for your slow progress. You may never have staff more diligent than you in your employment. If you do, you’d most probably frustrate them and they’ll leave. A proverb states that a team of horses takes their pace from the leading horse. In ancient times, army Generals physically led their armies to war. You have to be the lead horse, if you really want to succeed. Your employees must see their General ahead and in front showing how to conquer the land of whatever business you’re involved with!
