HOW
TO FIND YOUR OWN CHURCH & MINISTRY WORKERS
One of life's most beautiful experiences is responding positively to God's call into ministry. The feeling cannot be explained, and the encounter is difficult to express in words. However, the euphoria seems gradually washed away when the minister faces the harsh realities in the real world where he or she is to fulfill that ministry.
WHERE DO CHURCH WORKERS COME FROM?
This question lives on the lips of everyone answering God’s call to the ministry, especially pastoral ministry.
So, where do workers come from? The simple answer is they come from God as He sends people your way. However, working out exactly who has been sent by God is the tricky part. How do you begin to identify who God might be sending your way to work with you?
1. THE HARVESTERS
The Holy Spirit is the heavenly recruiter. The Lord Jesus said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest (The Holy Spirit) to send out laborers into His harvest." Matt 9:37-38, NKJV (emphasis mine).
You receive them by praying for them. Ask God, and He will send them. Also ask for wisdom to identify and place them when they show up. The Greek word translated labourers in Matthew 9:37-38 is ergates, which means a field labourer, a husbandman. A husbandman is a person who operates a farm.
In the context that the Lord Jesus used the word, he was referring to farm workers who would come into the farm at harvest time to do the harvesting.
The owner of the harvest the Holy Spirit is the One who sends labourers into his harvest. Actually you are also a worker in the Lord's vineyard!
2. PEOPLE IN YOUR RING OF RELATIONSHIPS
Your ring of relationships includes nuclear and extended family members, and then your friends.
Your Spouse & Nuclear Family - For the married, your spouse is your most senior worker. If you have children, they would probably find expression in your ministry if you work in such a way that includes and encourages them to serve God as a lifestyle and career. Here is where wisdom and caution is required. Don’t make your family suffer lack 'because you are a minister'. Instead, use your faith to show them how God cares for those He calls.
Care for your family as a priority, not as an afterthought, and they will release you to be and do all that God requires from you.
Extended family - Working with extended family members may put your relationship management skills to the test, but they can be very reliable supporters in the ministry.
For Moses, God gave him Aaron and Miriam, his elder siblings. God built the Levitical priesthood order on the house of Levi. God established the kingship of Israel on the house of David. Our God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob -a family line. He is the God of Israel -a tribe or family. Truth is, family is the first place we know. If ever everyone else walks away, our family will hopefully stand by us. However, you should not force them. Let God touch them in His time and way. They may come around with time.
Close friends - If you have ever been a good friend to others over time, you will probably inspire some comradeship for your ministry from some of them over time. Each will do different things for you. Identify what each has to offer per time as God gives grace and be grateful for whatever support they give. They may not attend your church or meetings, but who says they can't still be instrumental in making certain things happen in your ministry? Don't cut anyone off? Your support is first and most of all God, never forget.
People in our ring of relationships are only vessels that God may use. They are not your God. They do not owe you anything. They do not have to do anything. If they do, be thankful. If they don't, still remain focused on the God who called you!
3. THE PEOPLE YOU MINISTER TO
Every day you minister, God places potential workers at your disposal. Don't be shy to state what areas of support you need.
One workforce challenge that many ministers create for themselves is creating units that the ministry does not have manpower to handle. For example, a pastor wishes to set up a choir from a congregation of ten members -four working adults, two teenagers and four children. And two of the adults are the pastor and his wife. Who will be in the choir? Let your ministry's needs determine what units to set up. That way, you will always have sufficient human resources for the work per time.
But even none of these people
support you, so what? The God who called you will still position people around
you at every point of need to handle certain things on the long or short term.
They may not look like the ones you need, but how can you tell?
Work with anyone whom God brings your way. Appreciate those who try, regardless of how little their contributions. Focus on getting the job done. Not on who is doing it. Truth is, soon they'll all be jostling to do something in the church when your ministry starts achieving admirable results. And friend, it's merely a matter of time!
God bless.
