DIAKONUS: EMPOWERED TO SUPPORT

 

Two types of support exist in the Helps Ministry.  First is the Specific Assignment support,  as seen in the example of the Deacons in Acts 6. They had a specific job to serve tables. Second is the Unspecified Volunteer support as in the case of Dorcas who ministered to the widows through clothes-making (Acts 9:39), and Joses (surnamed Barnabas) and others in Acts, who sold their lands and property, and brought the proceeds to the apostles for distribution to meet the needs of brethren in need (Acts 2:44-45; Acts 4:34-37). This type occurs when someone is in position to meet a need within the local assembly by reason of gifting, skills or divine endowment, does so.

As a church member, you can support your pastor using any of these avenues. However there's need for caution, especially with Unspecified Volunteer support. Take time to cross-check that your intended support is in line with the church's policies.

Truth is, you are God's flame, and you have been divinely empowered to light up an aspect of your Pastor's God-given assignment. Another thing about Flames is warmth. Through you, God will pour comfort upon others just like Dorcas and Barnabas did. You will however only get the best results if you adopt the attitude of the Lord Jesus, who said, "...But I am among you as he that serveth." (Luke 22:27)

As in the days that followed the involvement of the first Deacons in Acts 6, your home church will see much more of the Power of God in demonstration as you find your place of providing light and warmth for different areas of your Pastor's vision as God enables you.
