BUILDING YOUR VISION - AMBITION

 

Ambition is a cherished desire, for example, an ambition to own your own business. It is also a strong drive for success. Ambition is good within context. Ambition is a key ingredient for building your vision, for without ambition, there will be no drive to succeed.

Many define ambition negatively, but it is a good thing. If you never had ambition, you would never make plans to achieve any single thing in life. Our circumstances are usually the product of someone else's ambition. For example, Nigeria is today run by civilian democratic government. A number of persons had that ambition. You probably work in one corporation or the other.

Your job was made possible by someone else's ambition. If you own a car, you are riding in the product of someone else's ambition. All of creation and nature is a product of God's ambition. So ambition, when kept within context, is a very good thing.

Context in this case refers to the impact that your goal has on others before and after it has been achieved. For example, do you subject your employers to all manner of devious practices just to secure contracts? What taste does dealing with you leave in the mouths of those who encounter you?

Ambition becomes inordinate, harmful, dangerous and disruptive when the drive for success is at any cost. According to Joseph Conrad, “All ambitions are lawful except those which climb upward on the miseries of others.” Truth is, you are won't be building your vision if you operate on inordinate ambition. You'll only be developing vices. And the truth is, what goes up comes down.

So, how do you keep your ambition within context? Follow the golden rule. Is your action likely to hurt someone else even though your goals will be achieved? If so, find another way. Operating on inordinate ambition is like driving against a one-way road at high speed. There is a very high probability of very costly consequences! If you add a consideration for other people to your ambition, you will succeed!
