BUSINESS START-UP: PREVENT DISRUPTIVE ASSUMPTIONS

Listening is a valuable skill for work-life. It is essential for effective communication across all levels and types of relationships. Problems often arise from actions based on what we assumed was said. It has been said that to 'assume' is 'to make an ass of you and me'. According to Plutarch, “Know how to listen, and you will profit even from those who talk badly.” Unfortunately some talk quite badly in the workplace, and you don't want to be a victim. But how can you ensure that you don't inform an assumption, and how do you avoid working based on an assumption? The solution is in the little word Feedback. Ask confirmatory questions.

For example, as a superior seeking feedback, ask, “Are we clear on what the directive is?” and require a verbal response (or even a written response if the issue is a very sensitive one). In fact, it might even serve better to give written instructions on sensitive issues.

To get feedback from a superior, repeat the entire message as a question. For example, if the request was for a car and driver for the week's field or marketing operations, ask, “Which car and driver has been released for our field operations, sir?” If that Officer didn't initially get the message, he would probably look at you with a 'question mark' look like, “I don't remember us talking about this.”

It is a wrong assumption that the subordinate should pay more attention to instructions than the superior should to requests and suggestions. At the end of the day, either’s misinformed action could cost the organization untold millions in reparatory expenses. In the words of nineteenth century Arthur Helps, “It takes a great man to make a good listener.” You can be that great man or woman!
