BUSINESS START-UP:

STOP DRIVING ME CRAZY!

Sound familiar? Offences are almost a natural feature in any human community, especially the church community. There are several things both leaders and team members do in the process of church work that drive the other up the wall. It therefore makes sense to identify the things we inadvertently do that makes us step on each other’s toes. Both sides suffer from offence. You see differently depending on which side of the fence you are standing. But we must realize that regardless of our different positions of service, we are all imperfect human beings. Each of us has the tendency to fall below the expectations of others. However, it becomes slightly easier to conduct ourselves better when we know what to avoid.

Let’s consider some things we do to tick off the other side negatively.

LEADERS

Not keeping to Time

Time is an issue that elicits different reactions from either side. For the leader, time is a tool for operation. To those you lead, time is their personal contribution to your success. You have a multiple of time per person in attendance. For every sixty minutes you call for with ten persons in attendance, you have 600 minutes at your disposal. When you call for a meeting and do not keep to time or agenda, you create a chain of reaction in the personal plans of your members because they consider that it is their time you are taking up - even when it’s for their sake. People only care to burn time when their personal gain is obviously in focus, even you. People who will wait for an hour late business appointment will frown at a ten-minute extension to your group meeting. They believe that their time will be paid by that transaction, unlike your church group’s meeting. The only currency you have to pay your people with is an obvious respect their time. Don’t take up more than you ask for. And church work is for ‘ever’, in a sense. You can always pick up from where you stopped the last time.

Breaking Promises

Nobody is comfortable being led by a promise breaker, even you will not. Don’t make promises you won’t keep. If you say it do it. It is better to say ‘No’ first then ‘Yes’ later. According to Oswald Chambers, “It is better to run the risk of being considered indecisive, better to be uncertain and not promise, than to promise and not fulfill.” It is quite difficult to plan and execute projects under a promise-breaking leader. An English proverb says, “A man of words and not of deeds is like a garden full of weeds.” Do your people a favour – let your words be reliable.

GROUP MEMBERS

Disobedience

Disobedience is simply a failure to obey. In the words of Geoffrey Grogan, “Understanding can wait, but obedience cannot.” As a group member, flagrant disobedience will surely reap your leader’s annoyance and disfavour. God hates disobedience. The prophet Samuel said, “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice...” (1 Sam 15:22) Disobedience is a tear in the fabric of any group of people. It belittles your leader and hinders his / her results, which is one reason it is vehemently resisted. It creates a feeling that even you will personally detest. Whatever reason you consider as a basis for disobedience cannot compare with the damage you cause by operating out of line. It is better to drop out of the unit if you feel there is any reason why you cannot be obedient to the set leader in charge.

Not Co-operating with other group members

No leader appreciates non co-operative group members. They are a clog in the wheel of progress. They hinder the group’s potentials and frustrate the attainment of goals. When you operate in this mode, you make the work difficult for the leader and other group members. I trust that this is not your style of service? Co-operation makes you an asset to both your leader and fellow group members. The question, “Why did you join the group if you had no plans to co-operate?”

Today, make a decision that, as far you are concerned, you will never  be the reason why the other side will scream, “Stop driving me crazy!” And you’ll be blessed for it.
