BUSINESS START-UP:
NO ONE OWES YOU ANYTHING!
Through
life’s journey, I have witnessed many people who live with unfulfilled visions.
The interesting thing is how they hold on tenaciously to reasons they believe
are strong and good enough to keep them grounded.
Among the reasons for unfulfilled visions, you’ll find the following:
·
Lack of formal education or insufficient education,
·
Lack of funds to pursue a business idea, and
·
No one to help.
·
Not having a better paying job
·
An inconsiderate boss
·
Men not giving women a chance
·
Insufficient or zero funds to power a business idea
·
Parents who never managed their wealth properly
·
Relations who died
·
The harsh business environment
·
The state of the economy
·
Lack of infrastructure
And so
on and so forth.
Truth is, when you consider each of the excuses for non-advancement in life, they seem very logical, but are not totally unchangeable because very many men and women have survived and thrived operating in the same environment. My deduction is that if anyone can, then everyone can. It was George Washington Carver who said, “Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.”
Is it remotely possible that one of these excuses above is the limiting factor in your life? It has been said that the grave is the home of many unfulfilled dreams. Good reason why the place is so quiet. A number of those dreams went that way because the owners of the dreams placed the responsibility of the fulfillment of their dreams on other people. But today I urge you to adopt another attitude. One that acknowledges that no one owes you anything in life! The truth is, you can have a better life! You may not be able to change the past, but you can definitely influence your future.
Granted that there are people who are in situations today due to no fault of theirs, one fact remains - NO ONE OWES YOU ANYTHING! Not your rich father, your privileged elder brother or your well positioned younger sister. Not your uncle whom your father sponsored through school, or your classmate who’s now a political appointee. Not even your younger brother whom you sponsored through school instead of your own child? If these persons helped it would be good, but if they don’t you are still not limited.
Many in the past have been dogged by these same challenges you face today, but the difference in their results is that they overcome, which you also can and I trust you will! What can you do? How do you begin to live above the limits that the present situation seems to have placed on you? What actions are necessary to effect a gradual change in your story? I want to suggest the following simple steps. Now, I am not promising you a ‘miracle cure’, but a gradual steady change if you diligently act on these simple principles.
First, PRAY IN FAITH.
Yes pray. You will say you have prayed so many times to no avail, and you probably have. But did you pray in faith expecting definite things from God. One woman’s pray went thus,
“Oh God, you know how I have lived in this poor situation for so long. I have tried so hard to get a job to no avail. My children are so stubborn and uncooperative. You remember my husband left us seven years ago. And now the landlord is threatening to throw us out. Oh God, my Lord, you know how life is so tough when one does not have money and how people despise you and wouldn’t help. I come to thee now. There is no one to help me. If only someone would. If only I could get a job, any job. And so I come to you now. Please let the prayer of your humble daughter rise to your holy throne today. Amen.”
That was a complaint session not a prayer session! Your prayer should state your desire in specific requests. And you should pray in faith having a definite expectation. You have been promised, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8) And since you are assured of an answer why not ask for exactly what you want?
After the confederate forces invaded the north of America during the American civil war, President is quoted to have said that he was confident of victory. It is said that he went to his room and got down on his knees in prayer. In Rufus Rockwell Wilson’s, Intimate Memories of Lincoln, p. 574, President Lincoln was quoted as saying, “Never before had I prayed with so much earnestness. I wish I could repeat my prayer. I felt I must put all my trust in Almighty God. He gave our people the best country ever given to man. He alone could save it from destruction. I had tried my best to do my duty and had found myself unequal to the task. The burden was more than I could bear. I asked Him to help us gain victory now. I was sure my prayer was answered. I had no misgivings about the result at Gettysburg.” On July 3, 1863, the confederate forces were defeated by the federal forces at what has come to be known as Pickett’s charge. Abraham Lincoln prayed. You too can. It was 19th century Robert Murray McCheyne who said, “God will either give you what you ask, or something far better.”
Second, CHANGE YOUR THINKING
An abundance of literature and research exist to prove that your thoughts mold your life. They affect your choices and decisions. Your mind is the seat of your Memory (thoughts about the past), your Reasoning or Intellect (thoughts about the present) and your Imagination (thoughts about the future). Your thought life works like pictures in color. When someone talks about a RED CAR, you don’t conceive the words red car, rather you conceive a picture of a red car of whatever brand you admire or are conversant with. The same occurs for life matters whenever you want to take a step that will lead to a better future. Your mind throws you pictures of your gory past of failures and disappointment. This throws an imagination of a future of repeated failure, and immediately your reasoning faculties tell you, “Hey, since you failed in the past, you’ll probably just fail again. Forget this idea.” And you promptly shoot down your grandiose dreams. In effect you do nothing to move away from status quo. Only those who never attempt will never fail. And who said failure was a jury’s sentence? It only means that you have not yet hit the nail on the head. Why not try again? Instead of letting your mind play defeat games on your life, why not turn it around you painting pictures of your own future success starting today.
Next, WRITE IT DOWN.
A written document in any venture in life is an evidence of a transaction. Today, enter a transaction to gain success by writing down exactly what you desire in life. A better financial status, a more impacting ministry, a more effective work-life, etc. Only you know what you really want. Ignore those mind games that tell you that you can’t achieve such a fantastic dream.
Whenever I conduct a workshop, I usually request that participants write down their questions. Reason is, it helps them properly articulate and focus their thoughts. It also saves the time of trying to phrase it right. The principle here is, if you can write it down, then you know exactly what you are looking for. This means you can identify that thing if it comes your way. Nothing gets built or made in the physical realm without first being clearly articulated. So, write down your greatness destination.
Fourth, IDENTIFY A SERVICE YOU CAN RENDER
Greatness is a result of service to God and mankind. Renowned scientist Albeit Einstein was quoted James A. Haught to have said, “From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: that man is here for the sake of other men -- above all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness depends.” In what ways does your daily breadth bring relief and sunshine to fellow human beings around you? If you seek wealth, please seek first the comfort of others. Wealth is only a reward giving to those who make life better for others. The interesting is, the more you give comfort, the more people who will give you returns! It’s not how menial it is, but how well you do it.
An example of a disadvantaged person who rose against all odds is George Washington Carver. According to Sam Wellman,

He was sent away from home
because no Negroes were allowed to attend local schools.

He didn't start college
until age thirty because of his skin color. And when he did achieve
extraordinary success, he chose not to patent his discoveries or profit from
them, instead donating his life savings to continuing research to help
mankind.
Among his achievements was the development of crop rotation, a method that "freed" the south from growing only cotton or tobacco. Because Carver convinced southern farmers to alternate such crops as peanuts, soybeans, and pecans, the south was able to recover from the war years and the loss of slave labor. Countless products that enhance modern life, such as peanut butter, ink, and plastic, were discovered or improved by Carver. Most important was his attitude to life. In George Washington Carver's view, God had given him these discoveries...and now he had the privilege of giving them to others.” God has endowed you with something unique. Find others whom you can help with your special gift. Among other benefits, it will take your attention off yourself. There’s nothing that makes life as full of joy as giving.
According to Esther York Burkholder, “Giving is a joy if we do it in the right spirit. It all depends on whether we think of it as What can I spare? or as What can I share?”
