BUSINESS START-UP:
IMPACT OF LEADERSHIP
God give us men a time like this demands.
Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands! Men whom the lust of office
does not kill, men whom the spoils of office cannot buy, men who possess
opinions and a will, men who love honor; men who will not lie. Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819–1881)
Do you presently occupy any form of leadership role? Are you a father or mother, elder brother or sister, employer or senior employee, politician or power broker, pastor or church leader, or whatever title your role goes by? Are you aware of what impact your leadership has on those you lead? If you’ve never really given it serious thought, today would be a good day to start. The world is dying under the weight of bad leadership.
REAL LEADERS INSPIRE GROWTH AND PROGRESS
eal leaders inspire their people to fulfill their potentials. Today’s society seems to have unfortunately lost sight of what real leadership impact should be. Today’s society celebrates any crook with few bank notes to throw around. There was a time when a child would not dare go home with even a friend’s toy for fear of the parents thinking he stole it, but today some parents push their daughters into prostitution for financial gain, just so that they can keep up with the Joneses.
REAL LEADERS PROTECT THEIR PEOPLE
Real leaders protect the people they lead evidenced by the virtuous use of resources kept in their care. Whatever you do should reflect care and concern for the people. Legislators ought to place themselves in the circumstances endured by those they serve before making certain legislations.
REAL LEADERS SPEAK POSITIVELY
In Numbers chapter 13, God instructed Moses, “Send out men to investigate the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You are to send one man from each ancestral tribe, each one a leader among them.” Moses obeyed and sent out twelve leaders, one from tribe of Israel. For forty days these eleven spies went through the land with a massive cluster of grapes carried on a pole between two to show for it. But when time came to give their report, ten out of twelve of them talk less about what they ‘saw’ – a good land, and more about what they ‘felt’ – fear and personal inability. These leaders’ words deflated whatever courage was in the hearts of the people. And the whole nation wept throughout that night from despair and discouragement.
As a leader, your concern for the people should not be misguided by your personal fears. Your positive words, attitudes and actions will inspire those you lead to forge ahead, even in the face of daunting challenges and even obvious danger. Regardless of your personal opinion, you should honestly consider all the variables concerned even when you may lose out. Your job is not about you but about those you lead. Endeavour to offer the best course of action that will serve the greater good. After all, that’s the job you accepted.
REAL LEADERS SET A POSITIVE TONE
The impact of a real leader’s outlook to situations will cause advancement. Followers take their lead from the leader’s outlook. If you believe something is possible those you lead will also believe it is. If you say it’s not they‘ll act the same way.
On May 25, 1961, President Kennedy presented a vision to a joint session of the American congress, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” According to an article by Richard Stenger of the CNN television network, “The president cautioned Congress that the cost would be significant, more than $9 billion in 1960s dollars. Congress accepted the challenge. Kennedy's vision guided NASA's human space flight program from the beginning. Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions were designed with his objective in mind. Despite skeptics who thought it could not be accomplished, Kennedy's dream became a reality on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong took a small step for himself and a giant step for humanity, leaving a dusty trail of footprints on the moon.” There’s nothing those you lead cannot achieve if you believe and set the tone.
REAL LEADERS BUILD THEIR PEOPLE
Real leaders search for opportunities to invest in everyone who works for them. An Arabian proverb says, “To be a chief of people is to serve them.” It’s better to honourably bow out if you don’t plan to help your people stand out.
REAL LEADERS PAY THE PRICE
Leadership always has a price and calls for personal sacrifice. According to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “He who would be a good leader must be prepared to deny himself much.” The Lord Jesus taught real leadership through his lifestyle. He sacrificed his life. You don’t have to get yourself nailed to a cross, but if you touch people’s lives when, where and how it matters, you’ll enjoy more co-operation and loyalty from them.
LET’S BEGIN RESTORING REAL LEADERSHIP - STARTING TODAY!
This generation must work very hard to change the present twisted perception of leadership in all realms - ministry, government and the corporate world. Leadership does not mean unhindered access to public funds. Leadership is not consistent with a flagrant disregard for law and order without corresponding consequences. Leadership is not synonymous with oppression, repression and tyranny. Leadership is honourable and not a means to a personal end. It is a door to public uplifting. It should not make you untouchable, but make it easy for you to touch more lives positively.
