BE SOLUTION-MINDED

 

Sometime ago at VBBS, while executing a client’s print job order, we realized that an error on the digital colour separation film had gone to press unnoticed. Delivery was due the very next day. With a short deadline, this error jeopardized all our efforts and a part of the job had become unusable. At that juncture, the feasible action was to apologize to the client that we experienced problems and so could not deliver. As it happened, payments had not been made, so we had no liability - in a sense. After a session of brainstorming, we agreed that reneging on a promise did not fit with our chosen corporate image. But still the promise stared us in the face. According to Henry J. Kaiser, “Problems are opportunities in work clothes.” Tell me about it!

With less than 24 hours to go, we decided to re-do the print job order, and by God’s help made the deadline, though with a slight over-expense, and working very late into the night.

In life and at work problems will arise but what options of action will you take? Will you quit when things get rough? Or keep complaining and grumbling when a client, staff member, contractor or supplier messes up? The truth is, every problem surmounted increases your proficiency. According to John Powell, “When you repress or suppress those things that you don’t want to live with, you don’t really solve the problem because you don’t bury the problem dead—you bury it alive. It remains active inside of you.” The deal is, rather than seeking an escape route away when problems arise, why not identify a solution? To every problem, there is a solution. Seek and you will find it!
