BUSINESS START-UP:

PAYING THE PRICE

What’s your vision? Do you realize that there’s a price you must pay to achieve it? Regardless of how noble your individual or organizational vision may be, attainment will remain a mirage until you do what is required to attain success. I have since learnt that there is no short-cut around paying the price required for achieving your vision.

Many feel that the nobility of their set objectives are good enough grounds for success, but that is so far from the truth. No individual, group, organization, government or nation can ever taste success without paying the necessary price.

As a nation, we desire to succeed in sports on the international scene, but do we? We never prepare. We refuse to pay the price. We desire a responsive government, but do not pay the price of turning down bribes and gifts with strings attached from politicians at election times. How can our dreams of a good government and a strong nation be ever achieved? Noble intentions are not enough to guarantee success. We have to pay the required price to achieve our set goal of a truly great nation!

IDENTIFY THE PRICE

What do you want to achieve individually or as an organization? There are only two ways to go: the tough road that leads to lasting results, or the easy route of compromise that leads to something that looks like your destination.

A frequent situation that occurred while I was in the university was the case of students getting too fatigued to write exams. All semester was spent on improving their social skills, and when suddenly exams were two weeks away, many would embark on what we called ‘marathon reading’. Unduly stretched study periods with little or no rest, punctuated with black coffee sessions to keep up the stamina. Often, ‘marathon readers’ didn’t make it to class, and some who did couldn’t co-ordinate themselves well enough to write the exams. That tells me something – you can’t even cheat the price!

WHAT’S THE LENGTH OF YOUR PAY-TIME?

In every endeavour of life, there is a length of time required to pay the required price. To have a baby you must go through 9 months of pregnancy. Any time less will result in a premature birth. Be it a vision for business, sports, parenting, ministry or public service, you must give the required time of paying the price. Business requires time to get established and build a reliable client base. Parenting offers no short-cuts. Children may grow biologically but will not develop socially, mentally, intellectually, physically, etc, except you make out time to consciously form and develop them on a daily basis. According to the US department of Labour website, “Aspiring musicians and singers begin studying an instrument or training their voice at an early age.” And that runs through life as long as they wish to remain significant in the music industry.

Every enviable destination has an unenviable journey. If you consider the destination worth the effort, you will find motivation from within you to make the trip.

DANGERS OF NOT IMMEDIATELY COMMITTING TO PAYING THE PRICE

·         Things will never remain constant just for you.

It has been said, ‘Make hay while the sun shines’. Truth is, with every passing minute, things are changing for you and around you. Some are irreversible like Age, physical and mental alertness, and others are not within your control, such as government legislations, the physical and economic environments, etc. So I say do what you must now. Nobody promised you tomorrow. Yesterday’s gone forever, tomorrow’s not yet yours, and today is here but already many hours old. An English proverb says, “He who is not ready today will not be ready tomorrow.”

·         Prices will change upwardly.

The cost for your fulfilling your vision will increase the longer you delay paying your dues. A life insurance policy will require larger payments for an older person than for a younger person. Ballerinas start at a very tender age when their bones are still very adaptable. If you want to wait till next year before buying equipment, even though you can deny yourself some pleasures to get them today, you will probably have to pay more for the same things. Stocks profits don’t wait for anyone. There’s a right time to get in or out. Miss it and will lose out greatly.

·         People you need may relocate or be otherwise engaged

It is utter self-deceit to think that things will remain constant till you are ready to commit to your vision’s fulfillment. While you delay, others are taken advantage of the opportunities and manpower you can use today to get your dreams fulfilled. The bottom-line is that nothing will remain constant just for your sake.

·         Environments will also change.

Many who thought the western world’s economy was unshakeable in the past few months now no better. Things change. Someone once said that the only constant thing in life is change. Resources may become depleted. People who depended solely on traffic jams to make sales in Lagos now have to rethink their strategy as traffic jams are reducing in frequency. Environments and favourable situations can change without warning.

·         Opportunities don’t sit around waiting for anyone

We have all heard that an opportunity once lost is difficult, and in many cases, near impossible to regain. If you delay to make a marriage proposal, you could be the very unhappy loser when you finally decide to. That job you turn down today because it pays little at present may become a goldmine just a few months down the line.

So much has been said friend, but the summary is, nothing in life is free. There’s a price for every prize. Wouldn’t you rather begin paying yours now? God bless.
