BUSINESS START-UP:
‘FACADES’: Skills & Tricks
You Can’t Be Successful With Other People If
You Haven’t Paid The Price Of Success With
Yourself – Stephen R. Covey
In his book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, Stephen R. Covey tells the story of one of his seminar participant who lamented about not enjoying the seminars because of the constant grilling he was getting from his wife every day he was away from home. On further prodding, Stephen discovered that this man had met his wife at a seminar while he was already married. Little wonder she was so suspicious of his actions in a similar environment. The man wished his wife would change her ways, but between you and I, what do you expect? Stephen concluded with a reply, “My friend, you can’t talk your way out of problems you behave yourself into.”
BETWEEN LIFE SKILLS & TRICKS
One seemingly invisible pressure on men and women is making the right impression on others. Even the most humble of us experience it from time to time. Many of us have devised ways of presenting the right front. Others have adopted techniques, many thanks to the plethora of motivational and personal development techniques available through seminars. We’ve learnt to ‘smile on the phone’, to sound friendly and pleasant to our listener. Job applicants have mastered the techniques for making interview panels believe that ‘this must be the man for the job’. Using the right décor for your office tells customers that you are successful (every when you are not paying your bills). A smart designer’s suit could be the key to landing a fantastic new account. What about making visitors to your office wait 30 minutes or more (for a mere 5 minute discussion), just to make them fill you’re really busy? It is widely thought that a crowded office desk means you’ve a lot doing. In reality, it could be a demonstration of disorganization?
FIRST IMPRESSION OR FALSE IMPRESSIONS?
Since we started believing that the first impression is what matters the most, many of us stopped making the effort to adopt our impression making techniques as day-to-day behaviors. Students will cheat to pass exams, employees will defraud their employers to have money enough to flaunt at the next village meeting, employers will deny their employees the due wages just to mark the ‘gone to summer’ register when their friends ask. I thought it funny the day someone said to me that you were on leave if you stayed in the country but on vacation if you travelled overseas (West African countries not included!).
DANGER: LIKE MAKE-UP, FAÇADES HIDE WRINKLES
Façades harbor a great potential for Vision Building, be it personal or organizational. For one, they make everyone on the outside think that all is well when really it is not. Secondly, these façades deny us help and support when otherwise others would have rushed to our aid. Recent incidents in the corporate world in our nation and abroad demonstrate this. The whole world of investors and stakeholders thought all was well while fault cracks were growing within business corporate structures. Eventually economic volcanoes erupted and very many fell victims. Same has been the pain of the many innocent victims who are made to pay the price for the funny bank-related operations we witnessed in our country recently.
BE REAL!
Stop the pretences and learn the behaviours. Integrity is not a motivational idea. It is a lifestyle of standing by your word. Make yourself pay your bills when they’re due, or apologize and re-negotiate them when it appears you may not be able to. Be polite, even when it’s your right to flare up. Obey your own laws, especially when no one can hold you to it because you’re the boss. Seminars and workshops should not be the opportunities for leaning newer ways of making better first, second or third impressions. They are not service points for re-filling with new tricks, but rather learning points for vital life skills. Don’t hold hands in public acting a happy marriage. If you commit to sincerely working out your issues observers won’t need to be told that you’re true happy in time to come.
START TODAY
You can begin putting the horse before the cart. It may seem difficult but Marie de Vichy-Chamrond said, “The first step is the hardest.” But you must start the change process from within you and within your organization. This crucial act of a new beginning as it were is vital. It was Plato who said, “The beginning is the most important part of the work.” Once it becomes a pattern or behavior, the right way of doing things will become a near natural set of actions and reactions with all concerned.
Teach your staff courteous behavior, not tricks of impression, and they’ll master on-phone politeness regardless of any provocation. Pay those you owe their dues and you won’t have to cut corners. Don’t take home more than is your due and your family won’t need to find out from the newspapers or television news broadcast. Be forthright to inform your contractors and service vendors of the truth about your financial situation before they send debt collectors after you. Plug all those gaping holes of sharp practices you pretend not to see. They could be your undoing someday and the door to colossal losses for your organization. Be prompt with assignments and deliveries. As a senior officer, choose to be an example of effectiveness. Be a role model employer. As an employee, be loyal and reliable – you too could be blessed enough to be an employer someday. Don’t promise if you won’t make it good. And make it good if you promise.
We all can have a more straightforward lives if we all could really be taken at ‘face value’. What people see or think of you can really be the real deal and not just a façade. Referring to Stephen Covey’s words, we all can ‘behave ourselves’ in the situations we desire. Cheers!
