LEADERS@WORK …DO THEY GET YOUR POINT?

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION ALWAYS GAINS THE UPPER HAND!

As a leader, helping your people ‘get’ your point is so vital. And while many lack the required skills to say it and get it heard and understood as it really is, communication remains a job that every leader must do!

There are two vital parts to every effort to communicate:

1) What we [originally] intend to convey; and,

2) The actual response we get.

It has been proven that about 80% of job vacancies have effective communication and interpersonal skills as part of their key requirements. Little surprise! The power for results is generated primarily by verbal and non-verbal communication.

According to Mary Whelchel, verbal communication further breaks down into Verbal and Vocal modes. Verbal communication is represented by your choice of words, and Vocal communication refers to your tone of voice. Non-verbal communication is your body language, facial expressions, manner of dress, eye contact, posture, etc.

LET THEM GET IT

In the words of Daniel Robin, “The meaning of our communication is not what we think it means. It is based on the response we get from the other person.” The truth is, your workforce will respond and react based on what they receive from whatever mode of communication you employ.

If communication is the means by which we produce responses in others, we must become conscious of not only how, but also what we communicate.

Each of us is a radar machine constantly scoping out our environment. Human beings are sensitive to Body language, Facial expression, Posture, Movement, Tone of voice, and more.

COMMUNICATE WITH CREDIBILITY

Gaining credibility takes years to achieve, and maintaining it is a lifetime goal for any leader. One wrong move can erase in an instant many years of hard work. Communicating with credibility is an art form, one which you can master by using a few simple guidelines. So, how do you initiate and sustain credible communication?

ENHANCING CREDIBILITY

Credibility is enhanced through consistent verbal and nonverbal language. The key word here is consistency. Leaders who overlook nonverbal or body language, are dismissing one of communication's most powerful tools. When your verbal and nonverbal language is out of alignment, you send out a mixed message. The result? The person receiving that message is confused, wondering what to believe -- your verbal or nonverbal.

Nonverbal communication is speaking in a 'silent' language. You must have heard the saying, “ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS”. It reinforces or contradicts verbal communication. Nonverbal communication always gains the upper hand.

When nonverbal reinforces the verbal message, you maintain your credibility. When the nonverbal contradicts, or is inconsistent, with the verbal message, you run the risk of losing credibility.

Be consistent in your verbal and nonverbal language, and you will never have to worry about sending mixed messages that may jeopardize your credibility.
