CHURCH WORK TRAINING:
THE BENEFIT OF BEING A PROBLEM SOLVER
Little did Anne know that she was
taking care of her personal problems when she volunteered...
It was Thanksgiving and the church, where Anne worshipped, had asked for donations of non-perishable food items that week. The plan was to gather all that was brought into baskets to be given that evening to poorer families in the community. Now, Anne was the eldest of four children and participating in this activity was a problem as there were I nly four canned food items left to their names in the family's cupboard. After much prayerful contemplation however, Anne distributed the four cans among her and hr siblings and off they went to church. Everyone enjoyed the service [and I wonder all that went through their minds as they walked home afterwards].
Much later that day, the doorbell rang. On opening the door, she was quite surprised to see members of the committee standing at her door. Anne's family had been chosen to receive the gifts that had been donated to the canned-food drive including the four canned food items her family had given. Their cupboard became filled. They had baskets overflowing with food for the holiday.
Meeting people's needs is the purpose for ministry. And wherever a community of people exists, problems will naturally arise. The point to note however is, problems are not always a sign of bad things. They could result from growth. Take inadequate accommodation for worshipers for example.
Ministering to the needs of poor families was the problem in Anne's story. The solution was to make food supplies available, and the strategy was to receive donations from church members. But that strategy would never have been successful if Anne and other church members had never participated. But there's another interesting twist to this. Without realizing it, Anne's participation also made it possible for her own need to be met. The truth is, we sometimes unwittingly position ourselves for miraculous results just by contributing to the welfare of others as servers in the church. Hartman von Aue agreed to this truth when he said, “He who helps in the saving of others saves himself as well.”
Serving within your Pastor's vision is not merely 'promoting another person's ministry' as claimed by those who lack understanding. It is a key to your fulfillment in life and ministry. It grants you a degree with God as stated of deacons in 1st Timothy 2:13, “For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Make yourself necessary to somebody.” Make your church membership count. Whenever a need arises and it's within your ability to fill the space, don't turn the other way. Remember the famous slogan of the Nike sportswear brand, 'Just Do It'!
