CHURCH WORK: TRAINING, WORKERS’ PERFORMANCE & MINISTRY MANAGEMENT

CHURCH WORK TRAINING:

CONTRIBUTIONS OF TRAINING TO WORKERS’ PERFORMANCE AND MINISTRY MANAGEMENT

The impact of Training is not limited to promoting efficient ministry workers performance. It is the most effective for tool of sound management.

Modern technology does a lot of good things for organizations and ministry is not in any way excluded. Training can be used to speed up workers skills and efficiency, improve the quality of spiritual service in the local assembly, and tremendously decrease delivery times of necessary acts of ministration to church members and the community served by the local assembly. These capabilities of modern technology, however, are useless unless church workers are familiar with them. In untrained hands, it can disrupt the smooth flow of work instead of making it efficient. At no time in the development of ministry for more effective world evangelism has workers’ training become more crucial than it is today. Although employee training, in secular circles has long been recognized as one of the essential tools for effective business management. According to research, various companies invest more than 100 billion dollars on employee training and education annually.

Ministry practitioners cannot be less professional in their outlook on organizational development. The matter of training is held in very high regard by scriptures as a basic foundation for future success. Consider Solomon’s wisdom when he declared in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” The truth is, if you want certain results from your workers next year, you must begin conditioning them from today through training.

At a workshop, a minister asked, “What do I do about my present crop of people? Most are not well educated. Going out on evangelism is more of a challenge than a mission as vocal communication with those they meet is so difficult. How do we grow if we can’t even evangelize?”

The answer was – “You have two options!” Both are workable but one is more rewarding. So, for the short term and to meet your immediate outreach needs your ministry could hire staff to do your outreach work – a form of ‘outsourcing’. But you’ll still be left with your half-educated people and still have the potential problem of their inability to communicate vocally. This will eventually slow down the rate of establishment and development of new members that your hired staff will bring into through outreach. The second option is to strategize for the long term by taking out time to train this potential army of ‘fishermen’ like the Lord Jesus had.

Every organization of worth takes training as a key part of operations and so should you. If the Lord Jesus devoted took three whole years to prepare his mixed lot of future world changers, how more in a hurry can you be? That same band of ‘unlearned’ men according to the religious gurus of their day, are directly responsible for the results we’re still experiencing in ministry today.

Society has transformed greatly over the past decades, and the rate of change is even faster today than ever. And be assured that it will only get faster. Your ministry cannot be left out if you must affect your community with unshakeable impact.

The concept, scope, and methodologies of training required by your ministry’s workers will depend on both your short term and long term goals as an organization. Prayer makes power available for the individual to act on the skills and capabilities that have been learned, impacted and imparted through formal and informal training. This is exactly what happened after the upper room experience in Acts chapter two. The empowerment of the Holy Spirit made efficient the abilities achieved in the three years in which the apostles were instructed, guided and mentored by The Lord Jesus. It took some measure of training for so-called unlearned men to manage a mixed-crowd community of new believers numbering five thousand.

Training should not be limited to the knowledge and mastery of bible chapters and eschatology, homiletics, etc. At Vision Builders, we recognize that each worker is first a human being who must relate with other human beings within and on behalf of the local assembly. These days, church-life is going far beyond the walls of the church building and in some cases, church workers are even engaging government authorities as co-custodians of public welfare on behalf of their churches. It would be disastrous to be ignorant of protocol when dealing with government circles. The business world cares less about prayer and more about the bottom line. Your workers should understand their way of thinking, to better relate to their attitudes about church life and the Christian life. To properly equip the church worker, attention should be given to at least three major areas - Spiritual, Social and Technology.

The Spiritual is taken care of every week and especially on Sundays. It should also comprise teaching on the Helps ministry and leader-worker synergy in particular. The Social aspect will cover pillars of People skills, in particular Communication, Etiquette and Relationship. The technology aspect should make them more compliant with the computer and virtual communication modes, as well as basic writing communication skills. Other areas of more focused training can be identified by the future needs of your goals.

CHOOSING TRAINERS

Training programs should be focused on providing workers more than adequate knowledge and skills about the assignments they will soon assume in and on behalf of their local church. But how can ensure that your efforts and expenses will be well spent?

Training topics, content and methodologies for your workers should not have a narrow focus. At the close of training workshops, it should enable your ministry as a whole in the following ways:

· It should have as your global or final goal as its end-view.

· It should also help your ministry workforce at all levels, rank and file alike to generate methodology for,

· Of course, each participant should be enabled to perform well and better at their duties.

· It should and empower your entire system with the ability to effectively minster to a constantly changing society and environment.
