tVB 78: BECOMING A BETTER NEW EMPLOYEE: Actions and Attitudes

BUSINESS TRAINING:

Being new to employment is no limit to becoming A Better Employee! You can function as a point of 'Strength' in your job and professional life. We'll begin with...

YOUR ACTIONS AND ATTITUDES!

1) What You Should Know and Do
2) Self-inflicted Problems of New Employees
1) WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW AND DO:

You have not encountered corporate culture of any kind and so may find walking the ‘official turf' somewhat slippery in some cases. Your Employer's demands may seem difficult to identify and satisfy, especially when it's a ‘One-man Business', as many job seekers have tagged small business owners. But, come to think of it, small businesses are the holding base of any economy, whether developed or developing. Many multinationals in existence today grew out of small, ‘One-man' Businesses. Anyway, my focus here is on what you need to do in those critical First 30 / 90 Days!

IT'S A CRITICAL PERIOD!

From the moment you show up for work, your Employer expects the world from you (and sometimes, even another planet too!). After all, your responses at the interview and CV have promised that you will deliver. Your Employer or direct Boss (for those employed in bigger establishments), expects you to hit the ground running. And I'm sure you wish so too, but sometimes it could feel like the ground is slimy, riddled with potholes or even farther from your feet than you expected.

Many, especially young ladies, have been known to break down into tears lamenting, "What kind of job is it?" Consequently, many resign.

You must realize, however, that your First 30 / 90 Days can be a foundation for better or for worse in your professional career and stay in that particular job. Only YOU can make this decision!

As you know, a strong Foundation is quite critical in the survival of whatever structure is eventually built. The foundation you lay within your First 30 / 90 Days will determine your positive establishment, speed in advancement, and personal progress in your new Job! This critical period offers amazing opportunities to men and women who are Freshers to formal employment.

Your First 30 / 90 Days are a period when no one particularly expects nothing fantastic or outstanding from you. Truth is, many eyes are watching you. Nothing you do is hidden. You may not be conscious of your habits but many describe your Character by them. This reminds me of two experiences.

We had a focused Seminar for Church Workers. After the Seminar ended, a lady came by to say hello…well, so I thought till she said…
"My name is.... I am from so-and-so Organization. My Boss is sorry he couldn't make it and sent me to represent him."
I thanked her for coming and sent my regards to her Boss, but she continued, "...Sir, now I'm in trouble. I was late. He warned me, 'Whatever you do, don't get there late. They keep to time!"

She had walked into the Seminar room a few minutes to closing as I rounded up and we prayed. Although I felt bad for her, I was glad about something. In the two or three times her Boss had attended our Seminars, he must have noticed us keeping to time. I didn't particularly know he observed that until that lady said it.

USE AVAILABLE WORK OPPORTUNITIES POSITIVELY!

Somebody somewhere is watching you! But you don't particularly have to know who it is. That's my second experience. Although it wasn't in my First 30 / 90 Days, I think the message in it is useful.

A few months after my resignation from paid employment to pursue my Training and Publishing passion, I was told that some Taxi Drivers were asking after me. These guys worked and parked their Taxis around my former office place. They said, "We've not been seeing the man who parks his blue car here. He is usually here early before us. What happened?" I was amazed that Taxi drivers noticed my early resumption. I didn't particularly know them closely, but for simple greeting now and then.

Use your First 30 / 90 Days to position yourself for progress. Function in ways that officially determine the right impressions and perceptions of your professional and human abilities. A lot of what I could not officially deliver in my first few months became my official responsibilities within a few months. I learnt them.

A number of the job-related problems experienced by Freshers ARE ACTUALLY CREATED by Freshers within their First 30 / 90 Days (as you will discover if you endure long enough)!

For example, many dabble in Jobs and Schedules that they cannot handle and have no idea about JUST FOR SALARY SECURITY! Please, regardless of your needs, do not yield to the mere desperation for a salary just for financial independence. You will have obvious challenges on such a job.

Within the First 30 / 90 Days, every new Employee should take the following Seven Smart Actions officially and within already accepted Terms and Conditions:

1. Determine Right Impressions For Yourself
2. Have A Good Character
3. Win Trust
4. Demonstrate The Credibility Expected From You
5. Demonstrate The Required Skills or Work-abilities
6. Demonstrate Responsibility, Initiative and Tact
7. Meet The Work Targets and Goals

LEAVING OUT ANY OF THE ABOVE could place a stain or strain on your professional life. Avoid it. Do not function negatively, especially if you're in a professional line that requires official references in the event of moving to a higher level of operations.

I am very confident that you CAN be your best. Do it! (Excerpt by permission from A BETTER EMPLOYEE by Tope A. Banjo, published by Vision Builders)

2) SELF-INFLICTED PROBLEMS OF NEW EMPLOYEES

Many Freshers to formal employment erroneously think that a Job is merely a series of daily trips made in a month to the office. Far from it! You are employed to accomplish certain tasks each workday within each month. Meeting daily goals is what qualifies you for the proverbial ‘honest day's pay'!
