TVB 68: THE SERVING LIFE
CHURCH WORK TRAINING:
Since 1991, Acts of The Apostles, chapter 6, verses 1-5 has been a key reference at our Church work Training Workshops. I had quite an experience the day my Pastor preached with these verses.
I have
always viewed these verses from the angle of appointed leaders and volunteer
church members being involved in the daily work of ministry to enable their
Pastor to focus on the core duties of overseeing the local church through
prayer and the ministry of the word. But this time, my Pastor's focus was on
the suitability of each individual church member where Service is required. He
asked the question, “If people who know you were to choose people to serve,
would you be chosen?” That really set me thinking.
WOULD YOU BE CHOSEN?
The
seven men who were chosen and appointed to serve never really had a time to
prepare for the work. It is possible they were already doing their bit to
alleviate the crisis situation on ground at the time. If not, why would anyone
have nominated any of them for the work? You will only be recommended for what
you are known by. With the way you currently operate in church, would you have
been nominated if you had been in the Jerusalem? These men did not seek
recognition before serving. We knew nothing of them till they were chosen and
ordained. While these seven men worked, some others complained. In which group
would you have been found in if you had been?
What
are your pre-conditions for offering Service? Do
you directly or indirectly demand or insinuate some form of reward or
recognition for your contribution?
I knew of one person who financially supported one of the outreaches in his church, but with a little string attached. He wanted to be placed on the executive committee!

CHARACTERISTICS SET APART
One
other thing about these seven men was the characteristics that set them apart.
They were men Full of the Holy Spirit, people, each of whom
enjoyed a good reputation among all and men whose ways
showed wisdom. You will not see these three qualities in selfish or
self-centred persons! It is a set of qualities that attracts recognition to
persons who make the welfare of others their business. What qualities will
people speak of when they describe you?
BECOMING ‘NOMINATE-ABLE’
Another
interesting part of that sermon was that every church member and worker could
become ‘nominate-able’ just by following their example.
The key
was their selfless concern to solve problems while others complained.
SO…
- Get into God’s word, the Holy Bible
-
Spend more time in personal prayer
-
Identify where you can be a most effective participant
-
Separate yourself apart from complainers
- Get
involved with those who are solving problems
HEY, NO ULTERIOR MOTIVES!
Your
goal for serving should not be to get appointed as a church officer, but rather
that you will live the serving life that God expects from you especially as a
church member or worker (Appointed or Volunteer).
I know
you can and will make it!
I’d be
glad if you share a comment on becoming a reliable Church work person.
God Bless!
